When We Have Been Deeply Hurt – Lessons from Joseph

Being hurt by others can shape us more than we realise. Betrayal, rejection and family conflict often leave scars that affect trust, confidence and peace. Yet the story of Joseph shows that God can bring healing even after deep pain.

At Church in Heald Green, we want people to know that hurt does not have to define your future.

Joseph was deeply wronged by his own brothers. They rejected him, stripped him of dignity and sold him into slavery. Imagine the trauma of that moment. Those who should have protected him became the source of his suffering.

Sadly, many people understand that kind of pain. Sometimes it is not strangers who wound us most, but family members, close friends or trusted people.

Pain Is Real – But It Is Not Final

When Joseph met his brothers again years later, the emotions were intense. He remembered everything. Scripture shows moments of tears, tension and inner struggle.

This reminds us that emotional wounds are real. Faith does not deny pain. Christians are not called to suppress hurt or pretend everything is fine.

Instead, we bring pain honestly before God.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.”

God sees every betrayal, every disappointment and every private tear.

Hurt Can Become Bitterness – Or Growth

Joseph had every reason to become bitter. He could have used his power to punish his brothers. Yet instead of revenge, he allowed God to shape his character.

That is one of the great crossroads in life. Hurt can harden us, or it can deepen us.

When pain is surrendered to God, He can produce compassion, wisdom and spiritual maturity.

Many people spend years stuck in anger because of what others did. But freedom begins when we refuse to let someone else’s sin control our future.

God Can Use Pain for Good

Later Joseph says to his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)

This does not excuse evil behaviour. What happened was wrong. But it does show that God is able to redeem painful seasons.

Your story may include rejection, family problems or broken trust. Yet the final chapter has not been written.

What Can You Do Today?

Bring your hurt to God in prayer.

Speak to someone wise and trusted.

Refuse bitterness.

Ask God for healing over time.

Believe your pain can become part of your testimony.

At Church in Heald Green, we believe Jesus still heals wounded hearts and restores hope.

A Prayer for the Hurting

Father, You know what has happened to me. Heal my heart, restore my peace and help me trust You again. Turn my pain into purpose. Amen.
