When the Leader Wanes, the Battle Wanes – The Power of Support

Introduction

In every battle, whether personal or communal, leadership plays a crucial role. Leaders often bear the weight of guiding others through challenges, but what happens when the leader becomes weary? In Exodus 17:10-16, we see a powerful example of this as Moses leads the Israelites into battle against the Amalekites. This story teaches us an essential lesson: when the leader wanes, the battle wanes.

The Importance of Choosing Battles Wisely

Moses was on a mountain overseeing the battle, with Aaron and Hur by his side. As long as Moses kept his hands raised, the Israelites were winning, but when his hands dropped, they began to lose. This illustrates a profound truth: the effectiveness of a leader directly impacts the outcome of the battle. In our own lives, we must be wise about the battles we choose to fight. Not every challenge requires our energy, but when we commit, we must be ready to see it through.

Support for Leaders

Leadership can be exhausting, especially when faced with unrelenting challenges. Moses, though a great leader, needed support. Aaron and Hur stood with him, holding up his hands when he grew tired. This act of support was not just practical—it was pivotal for the victory. It’s a reminder that leaders cannot and should not fight alone. In our church, in our families, and in our workplaces, leaders need people around them who will step up and say, “How can I help?”

No Spectators in the Battle

The victory over the Amalekites was not just because of Moses, Joshua, or the men on the battlefield; it was a collective effort. Aaron and Hur’s willingness to step in and hold up Moses’ hands made all the difference. This is a powerful image of community in action—where everyone has a role to play, and there are no spectators. In our church community, this principle holds true. Our leaders need us, and we need each other.

Action Steps for Support

We can take practical steps to support our leaders and each other. Identify who your leaders are—whether in the church, in your family, or in other areas of life—and ask them how you can help. Recognize that when leaders feel supported, they can lead more effectively, and the entire community benefits. As we journey together, let’s commit to holding up each other’s hands, knowing that when the leader wanes, the battle wanes, but when we support each other, we can all win.
