Upside-Down Kingdom – Rethinking Success Through James 1:9-11
In a world that constantly tells us to strive for more, James offers a countercultural message in his letter to the early church. In James 1:9-11, we see a striking call to “take pride” not in our achievements or wealth, but in our humble circumstances. At first glance, this seems contradictory—how can we take pride in being humble?
James’s message is simple but profound: in God’s kingdom, everything is upside down. What the world deems valuable, God often undervalues. And what the world overlooks, God holds in high regard.
We live in a society that defines success by what we can achieve. We’re constantly bombarded with messages that tell us we need to improve ourselves—whether it’s through getting the perfect job, house, or body. But this endless striving leaves many people feeling empty, disconnected, and even depressed. Mental health issues are rampant, and part of the reason is that we’ve tied our sense of self-worth to the wrong things.
James challenges this mindset by telling us that our value isn’t tied to worldly success. He reminds us that the rich will “fade away like a wildflower,” underscoring the fleeting nature of material wealth and success. But in God’s kingdom, the humble are honoured. Those who have little by the world’s standards may have everything in God’s eyes.
