Truth on Trial – Standing Firm Under Pressure
One of the most powerful scenes in the Good Friday story is when Jesus stands before religious leaders. For anyone part of a church in Stockport, this moment speaks volumes about truth, identity, and pressure.
Jesus is brought before Annas, then Caiaphas, and finally the council. The atmosphere is tense. Accusations are flying. False witnesses are brought forward. Yet, despite all this, something remarkable happens.
Jesus doesn’t panic.
Instead, He stands firm.
The leaders are not really searching for truth—they’re trying to confirm what they already believe. As theologian John Stott once said, this wasn’t a pursuit of truth but a confirmation of prejudice.
Sound familiar?
We live in a world where people are quick to judge, slow to listen, and often more interested in being right than discovering truth. Whether it’s in workplaces, friendships, or online, pressure can come quickly.
And under pressure, many of us feel the need to defend ourselves immediately.
But Jesus models a different response.
At key moments, He speaks clearly:
“You have said so… you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One.”
He doesn’t hide His identity. He doesn’t water down the truth. He stands confidently in who He is.
Yet at other moments, He remains silent.
Why? Because not every accusation deserves a response.
This is a powerful lesson for us today. As a church in Stockport, we are called to live truthfully—but not defensively.
There’s a difference.
Being truthful means:
- Living with integrity
- Speaking honestly
- Standing firm in your identity
Being defensive often means:
- Reacting emotionally
- Trying to prove yourself constantly
- Letting others control your response
Jesus shows us that truth doesn’t panic under pressure.
Isaiah 53 describes Him as a lamb led to the slaughter—silent, composed, and surrendered. That silence wasn’t weakness; it was strength under control.
In our everyday lives, we will face misunderstanding. People may question our motives, challenge our beliefs, or misrepresent who we are.
The question is: how will we respond?
Jesus invites us to:
- Speak when truth needs to be declared
- Stay silent when defence is pointless
- Remain secure in our identity

Instead, you can stand firm, knowing who you are and whose you are.
Because when truth is rooted deeply, it doesn’t need to shout.
