The Weary Can Win – Finding Strength in the Struggle
Introduction
We all experience moments of weariness. It’s in these times, when the challenges seem unrelenting, that we can be tempted to give up. But I want to remind you today: the weary can win. Consider the story of Thomas Edison, the great inventor who faced numerous failures on his path to success. He famously tested over 1,000 materials before finally inventing the light bulb, and despite facing countless setbacks, he persisted. Edison’s story teaches us that persistence, even when we are exhausted, can lead to breakthroughs.
Real-Life Struggles
Recently, during a conversation with a friend from church, we discussed how many in our community are feeling weary. Personally, I’ve felt this exhaustion as well. Despite taking a break, I returned feeling as tired as before, with lingering health issues that many others in our congregation are also facing. As we move into a new season with renewed demands, we are reminded that the start of the new church year, like any new beginning, often comes when we’re feeling least prepared for it.
Another Battle?
In Exodus 17:10-16, we see the Israelites facing yet another challenge soon after they’ve just come through a period of intense difficulty. They had barely recovered from a water shortage in the desert when they were suddenly attacked by the Amalekites. It’s easy to relate to their response: “Please, not another battle!” This reflects how many of us feel in our own lives—we’ve just overcome one struggle only to be confronted by another.
Why We Face Repeated Challenges
Jesus said in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The reality is, life is a series of battles, each contesting the territory of our lives. Whether it’s family harmony, work success, or our spiritual journey, every area we strive to grow in is met with resistance. The enemy seeks to keep us stuck in places of insignificance and exhaustion, hoping we will give up.
Embrace the Battle
But here’s the good news: we are not called to give up. Moses could have said, “Not another battle,” but instead, he chose to face the challenge head-on. We too are called to push through our fatigue, recognizing that every battle is an opportunity to claim new ground. In every struggle, remember this: the weary can win. Victory is our inheritance, and every contest is a chance to declare, “I’m fighting back.”
