The Strength in Flexibility
“The greater the flexibility, the greater the strength.”
It’s natural to equate strength with rigidity. We admire things that stand firm, unshakable, solid. A strong wall, a firm stance, a decisive voice—these are the images that often come to mind when we think of strength. On the other hand, flexibility can seem weak. Changeable. Soft. But what if we’ve misunderstood the nature of real strength?
Consider the design of a skyscraper. These massive structures, reaching into the clouds, are not built to resist movement—they’re designed to accommodate it. Skyscrapers sway. They flex in high winds. They absorb shock during earthquakes. Why? Because a rigid building in such conditions would crack, collapse, or shatter. It’s the flexibility in the structure that gives it the capacity to withstand pressure.
This principle holds true in ministry and in life. Those who are too rigid often break under pressure. But those who remain grounded while adapting to change are the ones who endure.
The apostle Paul captured this truth beautifully in his letter to the Corinthians:
“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” – 1 Corinthians 9:22
Paul wasn’t changing who he was; he was fully grounded in Christ. But he allowed the expression of his calling to shift, to bend, to meet others where they were. That’s not a compromise. That’s courage. That’s wisdom. That’s strength.
Being flexible doesn’t mean being spineless or uncertain. True flexibility flows from a strong foundation—your identity in Christ, your commitment to truth, and your sense of calling. These are your roots. Everything else—the methods, the moments, the movements—must remain responsive to God’s leading.
We often admire leaders who stand their ground, but let’s also honour those who move with the Spirit, who listen to people, who adapt for the sake of love. God doesn’t always move in straight lines. Sometimes He interrupts our plans, shifts our direction, or brings someone unexpected across our path.
So, ask yourself: are you holding so tightly to your way of doing things that you’re missing what God is doing now? Are you willing to bend so you don’t break?
Let us be like the skyscraper—built tall, but designed to sway. Let our strength be proven in our willingness to move with God, not resist Him.
