The Right Time and Attitude for Reconciliation
Reconciliation is rarely straightforward. Even when there is a genuine desire to restore a relationship, timing and attitude can make all the difference.
Joseph’s story teaches us valuable lessons about both.
When Joseph finally revealed himself to his brothers in Genesis 45, it was not a spontaneous reaction. He had already met them on two previous occasions. He had tested their hearts, observed their behaviour and given himself time to process his own emotions.
Joseph understood that reconciliation requires wisdom.
Had he rushed the process, the outcome may have been very different. Instead, he waited until the right moment. He ensured all the brothers were present and that he was emotionally ready to address the past.
Many of us struggle with timing. Sometimes we rush into difficult conversations before we have prayed or reflected. At other times, we delay for so long that bitterness takes root.
The key is to seek God’s guidance.
Prayer helps us discern when to speak and when to wait. Trusted friends can provide perspective. The Holy Spirit can lead us towards the right moment to have the conversation that needs to happen.
Jesus highlighted the importance of reconciliation when He said in Matthew 5 that if we remember someone has something against us, we should first be reconciled before bringing our gift to the altar. Relationships matter deeply to God.
However, timing is only part of the equation. Attitude matters just as much.
When Joseph revealed his identity, his first concern was not revenge. His first question was, “Is my father still living?” Despite everything he had suffered, his heart remained compassionate.
His brothers were terrified, expecting judgement. Instead, Joseph invited them closer.
He reassured them. He comforted them. He reminded them that God had been at work even through painful circumstances.
Joseph also displayed extraordinary generosity. He provided for his family during the famine, welcomed them into Egypt and ensured their future security. His attitude reflected humility, grace and genuine love.
The Apostle Paul encourages believers to be humble, gentle, patient and eager to maintain unity through peace. These qualities create an environment where reconciliation can flourish.
Perhaps there is a relationship in your life that needs healing. Before taking action, ask two important questions:
Is this the right time?
And am I approaching this with the right attitude?
When both align, God can do remarkable things through even the most broken relationships.
