The Baby Who Offers Hope in Uncertain Times

The Christmas season is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, a baby who, as Simeon declared, would change everything. Yet, for many, Christmas can also bring questions: What does Jesus mean to me? How does his story matter in today’s world?

Simeon, a devout man in the Bible, recognized that Jesus’ life would divide opinions. He declared that the baby was “destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel” and would be “spoken against.” This prophecy remains true today.

Have you ever noticed how quickly we form opinions about people? Sometimes, we judge without ever truly knowing them. The same can happen with Jesus. Many dismiss him based on hearsay or assumptions.

Our modern world often speaks against Jesus. A famous example comes from 90s rocker Marilyn Manson, who once said he replaces Jesus in nativity scenes with a boiled ham. While this might sound absurd, it reflects a broader trend: we swap Jesus out of our lives for other things without considering who he really is.

But this Christmas, people are reconsidering. In a podcast, Joe Rogan discussed the emptiness of a secular society with no belief system. He pointed out that, while atheists often dismiss religion as outdated, we still crave meaning, morality, and hope. Rogan’s conclusion was simple yet profound: “We need Jesus.”

Why? Because Jesus offers something no one else can: a path to peace, purpose, and restoration. The Bible describes him as “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.” These titles reflect his roles in our lives. He listens to us, walks with us, forgives us, and empowers us.

At Bethany Church, we believe this baby changes everything. Simeon’s prophecy also pointed to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. He said to Mary, “A sword will pierce your own soul too,” foretelling the pain she would feel at her son’s death. Jesus came not only to teach and inspire but to save us through his sacrifice on the cross.

This Christmas, don’t just join the bandwagon of indifference or negativity. Investigate Jesus for yourself. Could he be the hope you’ve been searching for in uncertain times?

Jesus’ birth wasn’t just a moment in history. It’s an invitation to experience life in a new way—one filled with love, forgiveness, and eternal purpose.

As Simeon said, this baby changes everything.
