Rediscovering Joy in the Church
Joy is a defining mark of the Christian life—or at least it should be. In John 17:13, Jesus prays, “So that they may have the full measure of My joy within them.” This is not a superficial happiness based on circumstances, but a deep, sustaining joy rooted in relationship with Him.
After many years in church leadership, one thing becomes painfully clear: one of the greatest joy-killers in the church is overworked, under-supported leaders. When leaders are stretched thin, joy drains quickly—not just from them, but from the wider community.
It is easy to attend church as a consumer. We analyse the worship, critique the preaching, assess the children’s provision, and quietly note what could be better. While excellence matters, constant critique without contribution places a heavy burden on those who serve.
Joy grows when responsibility is shared. When we ask, “How can I help?” rather than “Is this meeting my needs?”, something shifts. Service is not slavery—it is freedom. Jesus did not come to burden us, but to invite us into joyful partnership in building His kingdom.
The early church understood this. In Acts, when practical needs threatened to overwhelm the apostles, others stepped forward to serve, ensuring that prayer, teaching, and care could continue with joy and effectiveness. Delegation was not weakness; it was wisdom.
Serving creates ownership. Ownership creates joy. Joy strengthens community.
There is something profoundly life-giving about using our gifts for the good of others. Whether practical or pastoral, visible or unseen, every act of service matters. And every act of service lightens someone else’s load.
Joy also grows when we encourage those who lead. A kind word, a prayer, or a willingness to help can restore energy and hope. We all have the capacity to give joy away.
Jesus prayed for our joy because He knows it is essential to endurance. Joy sustains faith in difficult seasons. It reminds us why we started. And it points the world to the goodness of God.
If joy feels thin in your spiritual life, perhaps the invitation is not to step back—but to step in. The church is meant to be one of the most joyful communities on earth. Together, we can make that a reality.
