Putting Skin in the Game – A Call to Action for the Church

We live in a world that often encourages us to stay comfortable, avoid risks, and focus on ourselves. But the Gospel calls us to something greater: to put some skin in the game, to step up, and to actively participate in God’s mission. In 1 Samuel 30:11-15, we find a powerful example of this in the story of an Egyptian man who, despite his dire circumstances, chose to take a risk and contribute to something bigger than himself.

David and his men found this Egyptian left for dead in a field. After receiving food and water, the Egyptian had a choice. He could have walked away, kept his knowledge to himself, and gone back to his old life. Instead, he chose to put some skin in the game. He told David about the Amalekites, guiding him to his enemies and ultimately playing a crucial role in David’s victory. This act required courage and a willingness to take a risk, but it also led to a significant impact.

This story challenges us as a church to consider where we can put some skin in the game. Are we simply attending services, or are we actively contributing to the mission? Are we consumers of church programs, or are we stepping up to be part of the change? The Egyptian’s decision to act rather than retreat speaks to us about the importance of active participation in God’s work.

It’s easy to sit on the sidelines, but God calls us to engage fully. This could mean volunteering in a ministry, reaching out to a neighbour, or even stepping into leadership roles. It’s not about having all the answers or being perfect; it’s about being willing to show up, contribute, and make a difference.

As we look around our church, we see many opportunities to serve. The worship team, kids’ church, tech support, and community outreach are just a few of the areas where you can make an impact. Each of us has something unique to offer, and when we put it all together, we become a powerful force for good in our community.

Putting skin in the game also means being willing to invest our time, resources, and energy into what God is doing. It’s about moving from being spectators to being participants, from being passive to being proactive. This requires a shift in mindset—from asking, “What can I get?” to “What can I give?”

Reflect on where you can put some skin in the game. Maybe it’s time to join that small group, volunteer for a service project, or even take on a leadership role. Whatever it is, don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back. God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called. When you step out in faith, you’ll find that God has already prepared you for the task.

Let’s be a church that doesn’t just talk about faith but lives it out boldly. Like the Egyptian, let’s take risks, make sacrifices, and put some skin in the game. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to make a difference. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to step up and be part of the change.
