The book of James provides a powerful message for us, not just to listen to God’s Word but to actively live it out. Just as James encouraged his audience over two thousand years ago, he’s telling us today: “Let’s do this thing!” Let’s turn our desires into reality.
The Desire to Change
Desires, when correctly nurtured, can drive us toward significant transformations in our lives. But often, our desires fall short because we fail to take the necessary steps to bring them to life. I recently watched a documentary that followed the journey of two men on parole, longing to be released. Despite knowing the rules and requirements, one of them struggled to follow through. His desire to reunite with his family was real, yet he couldn’t take the actions required to make that dream a reality.
Christianity in Action
This man’s struggle is a reflection of what many of us experience in our spiritual lives. We hear what God asks of us, but we find it difficult to act upon it. James addresses this issue in James 1:19-27, emphasizing that merely listening to God’s Word without acting on it is like deceiving ourselves. Our faith must be more than just intentions; it requires action.
Fizzy Pop Christians vs. Aloe Water Christians
James challenges us to move from being “fizzy pop Christians” to “aloe water Christians.” Fizzy pop Christians are quick to react, often with anger and frustration, like a bottle of soda that explodes when shaken. In contrast, aloe water Christians remain calm, bringing healing and refreshing words into their situations.
Conclusion
It’s time to decide which one you want to be. Will you allow your faith to fizz up and spill over in anger, or will you let it settle into a calm and healing presence like aloe water? Let’s take James’ encouragement to heart. Let’s listen to God’s Word and actually do what it says. Let’s do this thing!
