Holding Nothing Back – The Cost of Generosity
Introduction
Welcome back! In today’s blog, we continue exploring “Holding Nothing Back” by looking at the cost of following Jesus through the example of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.
The High Cost of Burial
Following Jesus was costly for Joseph and Nicodemus, not just because of fear of losing their reputations, but also financially. They gave Jesus the best burial money could buy, using 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes—an extreme amount even for a wealthy person. This act of generosity demonstrated their deep devotion and respect for Jesus.
Generosity in Our Lives
We all have expenses to cover, and life has become increasingly costly. It’s easy to put off what is due to the Lord during tough times. However, Nicodemus shows us the merit of holding nothing back. After his heart was moved by Jesus’ sacrifice, he spared no expense in honouring Him.
Giving from the Heart
Generosity is a heart issue. When Nicodemus had a change of heart, he gave generously. Likewise, our giving should stem from our love for God’s kingdom and our desire to see His mission fulfilled. This includes supporting our local church and its ministries.
Practical Steps
At Bethany Church, our running costs have increased while our offerings have remained static. We need to ensure our giving is proportionate to our income. Signing gift aid declarations, setting up regular standing orders, and using modern methods like QR codes and mobile apps can help us give consistently and generously.
Conclusion
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus didn’t let the cost hold them back. Their generosity is a reminder for us to review our giving and ensure it reflects our commitment to Christ. Let’s hold nothing back in our financial support of God’s work.
