Holding Nothing Back – What Use Is a Grave?
Introduction
Welcome to the final blog in our series “Holding Nothing Back.” Today, we reflect on the question: “What use is a grave?” and how Joseph of Arimathea’s actions answer this profound question.
Joseph’s Realization
Joseph of Arimathea stood at the crucifixion site, contemplating his rich man’s tomb, just yards away from Jesus’ cross. He realized that his grave was of no use to him when there was an immediate need to honour Jesus.
The Act of Sacrifice
Joseph used his own grave to bury Jesus’ broken body, choosing to honour Jesus over his own security. This act of sacrifice demonstrates that when we give our all for Jesus, we often receive far more in return. Joseph’s tomb became the site of the resurrection, symbolizing eternal life and hope.
Our Own Graves
We all have things we hold on to for future security—money, possessions, plans. But what use are these if they prevent us from fully committing to Jesus? Like Joseph, we must be willing to surrender these for the sake of Christ’s kingdom.
Living a Resurrected Life
When we hold nothing back, we open the door for God to resurrect new things in our lives. Joseph’s sacrifice led to the resurrection of Jesus, and in turn, he gained far more than he lost. Our generosity and willingness to give up our security can lead to greater blessings and opportunities to serve God’s kingdom.
Conclusion
Reflecting on “What use is a grave?”, we see that our earthly securities are insignificant compared to the eternal security we have in Christ. Joseph of Arimathea’s example calls us to hold nothing back, living boldly and generously for Jesus. Let’s embrace this challenge and live in a way that honours Him above all else.
