Grace That Changes Everything
As a teenager, I developed a phrase that became my favourite response whenever I was challenged about something. If my mum asked why I had left my shoes in the middle of the floor or my dad questioned the state of my bedroom, I would simply reply, “Throw a bit of grace around!”
What I really meant was, “Let me off the hook. Don’t make me take responsibility. Don’t expect me to change.”
Looking back, I realise I had completely misunderstood grace.
Biblically speaking, grace is not a free pass to avoid accountability. Grace is the freely given, unearned favour, love and protection of God. It is one of the most powerful themes running throughout Scripture and is beautifully illustrated in the life of Joseph.
Joseph’s story is remarkable. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused and imprisoned, he experienced years of hardship. Yet through it all, God’s grace was at work. God’s favour sustained him, protected him and ultimately positioned him to fulfil a greater purpose.
What makes Joseph’s story even more powerful is that he did not simply receive grace; he became a giver of grace.
When his brothers eventually stood before him in Egypt, Joseph had every reason to seek revenge. Instead, he chose reconciliation. Rather than making them pay for their sins, he extended forgiveness and kindness.
This reflects the heart of God towards us.
The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5 that God reconciled us to Himself through Christ, “not counting people’s sins against them.” Through Jesus, God offers forgiveness, restoration and a new beginning.
As Christians, we are called to do more than celebrate the grace we have received. We are called to become ambassadors of reconciliation. We are invited to extend to others the same grace that God has shown us.
This can be challenging. When we are hurt, misunderstood or betrayed, our natural instinct is often self-protection or retaliation. Yet grace points us towards a different path.
Grace seeks restoration rather than revenge.
Grace chooses forgiveness over bitterness.
Grace opens the door to reconciliation.
The question for each of us is simple: are we merely receivers of grace, or are we becoming releasers of grace?
God’s grace was never intended to stop with us. It is meant to flow through us, bringing healing, restoration and hope to the people around us.
