Introduction
Favour has a flavour. This idea runs through the book of James, specifically in James 2:1-13, where we see that God’s favour is not arbitrary; it has specific qualities that define it. If we want to live a life that aligns with God’s favour, we must understand what God values, what He blesses, and how that should shape our character and interactions.
The Flavour of Favour
When we think of flavours, we often think of our favourite meals. Just like we crave a particular taste on a Friday night—whether it’s a homemade dish or a takeaway treat—God craves certain characteristics in our lives. The Bible says we are to be the “salt of the earth,” adding flavour to the world around us. If our lives lack flavour or fail to reflect God’s nature, we miss out on the fullness of His favour.
The Danger of Superficial Favouritism
James makes it clear that favouritism has no place in the kingdom of God. He warns us against judging others by their outward appearance or social status. In his example, he highlights the contrast between a rich man and a poor man entering a church. The temptation to treat them differently based on their attire or status reveals a bias that goes against the very essence of God’s love.
When we choose to favour the rich or influential over those in need, we show a flavour of partiality that God disapproves of. True favour in God’s eyes is not about social standing or material wealth but about a heart that seeks Him and loves others without bias.
Becoming a Distinctive Christian
Jesus called His followers to stand out, to be a flavour that the world cannot ignore. Just as a well-seasoned dish stands out because of its taste, Christians should stand out because of their love, compassion, and humility. When our actions reflect God’s heart, we begin to experience His favour in ways we never imagined.
Conclusion
Living in God’s favour means embracing His values and letting them influence how we treat others. It’s about looking beyond the superficial and embracing the richness of God’s character. If we truly want to taste the flavour of God’s favour, we must learn to reflect His love, justice, and mercy in every aspect of our lives.
