Discover What’s Under Your Skin – Embracing Challenges to Uncover Potential

What if I told you that some of the greatest discoveries in your life lie just under the surface, waiting for you to dig deeper? In 1 Samuel 30:11-15, we learn about an Egyptian who took a risk and put some skin in the game, revealing a hidden potential that even he might not have known he possessed. This story challenges us to step out of our comfort zones and discover what’s truly under our skin.

When David asked the Egyptian, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?” it was an unexpected challenge. This man, once abandoned and left for dead, was now being asked to guide a group of warriors into enemy territory. His initial reaction might have been fear—after all, joining David meant going against his former masters and taking on a dangerous mission. But he chose to step up and accept the challenge, uncovering his potential as a leader and a critical part of David’s victory.

This narrative teaches us that God often calls us to step into situations that expose our deepest insecurities and fears. It’s in these moments of uncertainty that we truly discover what’s under our skin. The Egyptian in the story realized he had the knowledge and courage needed to guide David’s men. He became instrumental in the battle plan, demonstrating that even those who feel discarded or overlooked have significant contributions to make.

For us, the lesson is clear: when we put some skin in the game, we discover what’s truly inside of us. God often uses challenges and uncomfortable situations to bring out the best in us. It might be a new job that feels overwhelming, a ministry that seems beyond our abilities, or a personal challenge that pushes us to our limits. But in facing these challenges, we learn more about ourselves, our strengths, and the unique gifts God has placed within us.

Serving in the church or in any community setting can be one of the ways we discover these hidden potentials. When we step up to serve, whether it’s through leading, teaching, supporting, or simply showing up, we often uncover skills and qualities we never knew we had. We might discover patience in dealing with kids, leadership in organizing events, or compassion in reaching out to those in need. These are treasures that lie beneath the surface, waiting to be unearthed.

Remember the recent discovery of the second-largest diamond in Botswana? It was found beneath the surface, hidden from plain sight. Similarly, God has placed incredible value within each of us, but it requires us to dig deep, face our fears, and push beyond the surface. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back. Embrace the challenges that come your way, and trust that God is using them to reveal something precious inside of you.

So, what’s under your skin? Are there talents, gifts, or callings that you’ve yet to discover? Don’t be afraid to step out and take on new challenges. Join a team, serve in a new capacity, or say yes to an opportunity that scares you. As you do, you’ll find that God has equipped you with everything you need, and you’ll begin to uncover the incredible potential He has placed within you.
