A Baby That Changes Everything – Locally and Universally
It’s just 11 days until Christmas, the season when we remember the birth of Jesus. This time of year often brings memories of my own children as babies. I recall the excitement, anticipation, and the life-altering reality of parenthood.
When my wife Katie and I were expecting our first child, everyone warned us: “Everything’s about to change.” Katie took this seriously, spending months preparing—visiting baby stores, consulting friends, and scouring eBay for baby gear. I, on the other hand, thought I’d just “roll with it.”
Then the baby arrived.
To say it was a shock is an understatement. Exploding diapers, sleepless nights, and zero personal time became my new normal. It felt as though every moment revolved around the baby, leaving no room for anything else. Life had indeed changed, but in a way that was localized—our household and daily routines shifted, but the wider world carried on.
The birth of Jesus, however, was different.
This baby didn’t just change one household; he changed everything—globally, universally, and eternally. One scholar noted that Jesus is the most extraordinary figure in human history. He has inspired more songs, paintings, and literature than anyone who has ever lived. His impact is unparalleled.
The Bible tells us about an elderly man named Simeon who recognized this when Jesus was still a baby. Simeon was devout, waiting for the promised saviour of Israel. When Jesus’ parents brought him to the temple, Simeon declared that this child was destined to cause “the falling and rising of many in Israel” and would be a “sign spoken against.”
Simeon’s words remind us that Jesus evokes a response. People will form an opinion about him, whether they embrace him or speak against him. This Christmas, it’s worth reflecting: what opinion have we formed about Jesus?
The Bible describes Jesus as “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.” Yet, many in our society dismiss or swap him out, often without truly investigating who he is.
In a time of global uncertainty, more people are reconsidering Jesus. Public figures like Joe Rogan have acknowledged the shortcomings of secular society, highlighting a need for a moral compass. Rogan concluded, “We need Jesus.”
So, let’s use this season to pause and reflect. Simeon recognized Jesus as the baby who changes everything. Will you?
