Holy Hunger – When God’s Purposes Drive You Mad
Passage: Mark 11:12–14
Have you ever been so hungry it made you irritable? We all get “hangry” sometimes—but Jesus’ hunger in Mark 11 is about more than food.
Jesus was on a mission. He’d visited the temple the night before and saw the state of things: a place meant for prayer, turned into a profit machine. On His way back, He spots a fig tree. Hungry, He looks for fruit—but finds none. Even though it wasn’t fig season, Jesus curses the tree.
At first glance, it seems harsh. But Mark, ever intentional, includes this detail to tell us something deeper: Jesus wasn’t just physically hungry—He was spiritually starving. His people, His nation, were fruitless. The fig tree symbolised a nation failing to live up to its calling. That’s what really made Him mad.
When you start truly hungering for the things of God, you’ll feel that same frustration. You’ll feel mad:
- Mad that churches are empty or lukewarm.
- Mad that people are misrepresenting Jesus.
- Mad that injustice, compromise, and silence have crept into Christian life.
- Mad that we often feel powerless, passive, or unmotivated to do anything about it.
But here’s the thing: Holy hunger isn’t a bad thing. It’s a sign of spiritual life.
When we want more of God—His presence, His justice, His kingdom—it creates a righteous unrest in us. A discomfort that won’t let us settle for religion-as-usual.
Jesus’ hunger reveals His deep longing for spiritual fruit. Not rituals, not appearances—but transformed lives, real worship, and truth. He wants substance, not just a show.
So what about you? What makes you mad with holy hunger?
Maybe it’s the lack of passion in the Church. Maybe it’s injustice in your community. Maybe it’s compromise in your own heart.
Don’t ignore it. Lean into it. Let your hunger for God drive you. Fast, pray, wrestle. Ask for more. Ask that your life would bear fruit that lasts.
Because when you’re truly hungry for God’s purposes, you’ll never be satisfied with anything less.
